Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Male buffaloes - bulls - have a reputation for being short tempered and belligerent, yet all they really want to do is to be left alone to feed and wallow, hanging out with other males of a similar age and status in small groups. As father’s we all hope to act courageously when needed, to defend our interests and those of the family, to earn the respect of our companions. Spending time with one of these bachelor groups reminds of this. Bulls buffaloes are massive creatures with down-swept horns and heavy central boss that they use to butt heads with other bulls in trials of strength, and to defend themselves and members of the herd against lions and hyenas. To have a buffalo rear up out of long grass when you are on a foot safari is the stuff of nightmares. Given the chance a buffalo will turn and lumber off with an explosive snort when people appear on the horizon. But if it feels threatened it is likely to charge with the speed of a steam train and the impact of a sledgehammer. Time to clamber up the nearest tree!
